Every once in a while a Dream comes along that is so special you have to write it down. This is one of mine.
Grandfather Elder came to me in my dream last night. There is only one other time this has happened. Grandmother Elder has come to me many times during my life and I am used to seeing her and accepting her wisdom and guidance. I am still overcome with reverence that I received a visit from Him. . . .
In my dream Vaughn and I were deep, deep in the woods, scouting a location to build a new home. We had not even set up a tent yet, as we were looking for just the right spot. Suddenly we were surrounded by a pack of wolves. We froze. Though nervous and wary I was not afraid of them. We could hear in the distance men with guns and knew that they were hunting this pack. The lead wolf stepped closer to me, ever so slowly and then laid down in front of my feet. He was jet black and beautiful. Most of the pack were black, save for a few that had some brown mixed in the fur.
I looked down at the lead wolf at my feet and suddenly understood he wanted me to follow him. He got up, took a few steps and looked at me. I began to follow. Vaughn stayed behind to waylay the hunters and throw them off our track.
The pack and I ran through the woods until we came across a small, well hidden cave. The lead wolf stood in front of it and I knew I had to go inside. I crawled into the dark, cramped cave and the smell of earth and animal filled my nostrils. My eyes slowly adjusted to the near non existent light and I saw that the Alpha female was lying there. I edged my way closer to her and began to stroke her thick, luxuriant fur. She was as black as the Lead Male. My hand came across some wetness and I knew she had been shot. I was dismayed. I knew she was dying and I desperately wanted to help her. As my thoughts raced trying to find a solution on how I could get her help she gently nosed me and lay her head in my lap. She somehow conveyed to me she knew she was dying and that she was prepared to go. It was her time and she accepted it. Grief filled me; and tears streamed down my face as I curled myself around her to hold her gently. After a few minutes she moved away from me and I knew it was time for me to go. I said my final Good Bye, said prayers to honor her Walk with Spirit and crawled back out of the cave.
Once out of the cave the rest of the pack was waiting for me and we hurried away to stay ahead of the hunters. We traveled though the woods and eventually Vaughn caught up with us. Soon we came across a small town. The wolves stayed behind as Vaughn and I walked towards the glowing lights and the home we had there. We had been in the middle of packing up our house in preparation for our move to the home we dreamed of in the woods. We walked down the lighted streets and then started to cut through an empty, dark parking lot. It was dark enough that I rummaged through my pocket to look for a flashlight, when suddenly a man stepped out in front of me, blocking my way. At first I was frightened, but through his demeaner and calm way I knew I was safe and that somehow I “knew” him. The three of us walked on to Vaughn and mine’s home.
When we got there Vaughn left to go pack up things in the garage and I was left alone with the man in the house. We began to chit chat and I suddenly remembered these masks I had found. I was very excited about showing them to him and ran into another room to get them. The man followed me. I picked up one of the masks and turned to show him. It was then that I got a close look at him. He was tall, proud, gentle and there was a wisdom in his eyes that defied age and I knew he was Grandfather Elder. He took the mask from me and handled it with reverence. It was beautiful, covered in leaves and feathers and precious stones.
“This is a very special mask” he said and then glanced at the rest that were hanging on the wall. He gently touched each one and then suddenly stopped at the largest, most beautiful one of them all. The design was intricate and breathtaking. He gently took it off the wall and looked at me long and deep, then motioned for me to come to him. I stood in front of him, my heart starting to pound. He then placed the mask on my face. Suddenly my head started to spin, colors swirled in front of my eyes and I got so dizzy I had to sit down. Next I vomited on the floor and then passed out.
When I awoke I still could not see and the colors still swirled but the dizziness had subsided. I could feel Grandfather Elder hovering over me. He was moving his arms in a rhythmic dance and was chanting in a low, soft voice. Suddenly I could feel the air moving just above me, and I could hear the beat of wings. The wings beat slowly, but powerfully and I knew it was an eagle. As he beat his wings he started to rise and I could feel that he had piece of me in his talons. He was pulling on something deep, deep, inside of me, long forgotten, or not even known. As he began to rise the piece of me long forgotten began to fill up my entire being until I became one with it, and then the eagle let go and flew away.
I opened my eyes. The dizziness was gone, my sight clear. Grandfather Elder took the mask off my face and smiled.
“My daughter” he said “Your Vision is complete. You and the Mask are One. Use your Vision wisely, it will serve you well.”
The edges of him began to dissipate and soon he was gone. I walked across the room and then out the front door. The Pack of Black Wolves were there waiting for me and I walked with them, back to the woods.
